Nestled in one of our locations in Novi Knežev a chapter of history was slowly unfolding in the summer of last year. This plot has turned into an unexpected archaeological treasure trove.
Our search for a suitable site for our facilities led us to this specific location. Little did we know that the Intermunicipal Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments in Subotica would reveal the historical significance of this land. It mandated preliminary preventive archaeological research before any development could proceed.
The preventive archaeological excavations unearthed remarkable finds within the planned area for four facilities on the farm. Two discoveries stood out: the remnants of an ancient settlement and a necropolis. The settlement paints a vivid picture of life in the 3rd and 4th centuries. Houses, storage pits, grain pits, waste pits, and various other structures provide insights into daily life during that era. Archaeologists also discovered a necropolis with approximately 10 graves and another one with 20 graves. Each grave holds the potential to unlock stories of individuals and this civilization, as evidenced by the bronze bracelets, beads made of glass paste and amber, weapons, tools, fibulae, coins, and ceramic vessels found in the graves of the deceased.
Considering the recognition past generations had for the potential of this area as a suitable place to live, it serves as both a guide and confirmation for our decision to build on this location. Our ancestors knew how to choose the right locations to protect themselves from dangers and natural disasters. However, our connection to the past extends beyond the geographical; we are actively delving into and implementing traditional farming that is legume based and animal-free (e.g. instead of animal manure we use green manure) as well as traditional farming methods such as intercropping.
The collaboration between the scientific community and our commitment to preserving historical heritage exemplifies the vital role that companies can play in safeguarding our cultural heritage, and it sets a responsible development standard for the industry.
